School House System

Four houses — Pratap, Vijay, Vibhava and Tejas — each in a teacher's care, and a student council of ten captains drawn from the senior grade.

Every child at the school belongs to one of four houses — Pratap, Vijay, Vibhava and Tejas — and keeps that house for the whole of their time here. It is the first small society a child is answerable to: the older children lead it, the younger ones learn the ropes inside it, and a year of effort in class, on the field and in the corridor is counted to its name.

Each house is in the care of a house mentor, a teacher who knows every child in it by name and who steers the house through the year. Above the houses sit three school-wide portfolios — co-curricular activities, sport and discipline — each held by a teacher in charge, and it is in these that the houses meet one another.

The four houses

The names are Sanskrit, and each carries the sense of something the school hopes to see grow in a child.

The student council

The council is drawn from the senior grade and holds office for the year. Every post is doubled — once for a boy, once for a girl — and each captain works to the teacher who holds that portfolio. This year all ten captains are of Grade VIII.

Responsibility, not decoration

A captaincy here comes with work attached: a portfolio to look after, a teacher to answer to, and a successor to hand it on to at the end of the year.
